Usefull Tips

This page contains advice for mothers helps:

  • Make sure that you have a contract with your new employer. It is your employer's legal duty to issue you a contract within 8 weeks.
  • Make sure that your employer will advice their household insurance company that you are employ by them in their house so you are cover for any accidents.
  • Make sure that your employer will make arrangements to pay you tax and national insurance in accordance with Inland Revenue.
  • If you have got any problems or concerns talk to your employer.
  • Make sure you have got all important names and telephone numbers (for example, work number(s), doctor, dentist, hospital, children schools and burglar alarm company).
  • Keep a diary about activities with children during a day; it would be useful for future nannies.
  • Make sure you understand how parents want you to discipline the children.
  • If they have any diet requirement (for example, are they allowed treats like sweets).
  • Are you going to have a “kitty” for treats, etc.?
  • Check your working hours and enquire about whether they will need you to babysit on a weekly or occasional basis and are you going to be paid extra for these hours.
  • If you do not have First Aid Certificate you should arrange to attend a course for First Aid ASAP.
  • If you are ging to use the family car make sure that you are insured and find out whether you will need to pay for the petrol in your time off. What mileage you will be paid if using car for work.
  • Ask when you can use their phone.
  • Ask if you may invite friends at home.
